The Esports World Cup (EWC) is a major initiative to establish Riyadh as a premier global destination for esports.
Riyadh is rapidly establishing itself as a premier global destination for esports, driven by Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the National Gaming and Esports Strategy. The central thesis posits that the Esports World Cup (EWC) serves as a catalyst for transforming the city into a central hub for the industry, moving esports from a niche interest into the cultural mainstream while fostering significant domestic economic and professional development.
The EWC represents a massive logistical undertaking, featuring 24 distinct game titles, 2,000 players from over 200 clubs, and a record-breaking prize pool exceeding US$70 million. The event’s operational scale is substantial, encompassing 7,000 hours of live broadcasting across 35 languages, reaching an audience in 140 countries. Last year, the tournament attracted over 500 million global viewers, a figure expected to grow. The ESL FACEIT Group (EFG) manages these complex requirements, leveraging 25 years of industry expertise to coordinate partnerships with over 130 global brands, including Intel and Lamborghini.
Beyond the immediate spectacle, the initiative is generating tangible local impact, including a 30 percent surge in tourism and the cultivation of homegrown talent in event production and management. By integrating esports into the broader architecture of modern entertainment, the strategy aims to secure long-term growth for the sector. The initiative highlights a shift in how digitally native generations consume content, positioning Riyadh as a permanent fixture in the global esports landscape, comparable to established traditional sports hubs.
