International Journal of Games and Social Impact
A 2025 study published in the International Journal of Games and Social Impact examines whether young people believe they can learn history through digital games, drawing on Reddit discussions among history-themed game enthusiasts in both Turkish and English. Reddit was chosen because it is popular among users aged 18 to 29, who made up 44 percent of its users in 2024. The authors analyze 907 comments, with 80 coded in detail, applying a qualitative document and case study approach. The study frames its inquiry around two questions: the potential contributions of game-based history learning and its drawbacks.
Reddit users were divided on whether history can be learned through games. Of those expressing a view, 27 said yes, 17 said no, 15 said it depended on context, and 22 were undecided. The most frequently cited benefit was the building of general historical knowledge and interest, accounting for 47 percent of reported gains, with some users crediting these games for academic success. Teachers' accounts were more detailed and tended to recommend educational rather than commercial titles. The principal concerns were inaccurate or incomplete information, which made up 58 percent of criticisms, along with curriculum incompatibility, limited classroom technology, and propaganda. Titles such as Assassin's Creed were regarded as effective at conveying historical context and sparking curiosity, though participants agreed that games alone do not deliver detailed learning.
These perceptions align with prior research, which has found that history-themed games can enhance historical thinking and engagement while carrying risks of oversimplification and biased narratives. The authors conclude that educational value depends heavily on teacher facilitation, debriefing, and curricular integration. They also caution that their data reflects user perceptions rather than measured learning outcomes, and that Reddit's anonymity and linguistic scope limit generalizability.
