Hasbro’s second-quarter 2024 financial results underscore a strategic pivot toward digital gaming as a primary growth engine. While the company’s total revenue declined 18% year-over-year to $995 million, the Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming segment emerged as a significant outlier, achieving a 20% revenue increase to $452 million. Within this segment, digital and licensed gaming revenue surged 87% year-over-year to $144.4 million, signaling the success of the company’s transition from a traditional toy manufacturer to a diversified games and intellectual property firm.
The segment’s strong performance is largely attributed to the robust licensing revenue generated by Monopoly Go! and, to a lesser extent, Baldur’s Gate 3. Monopoly Go! has exceeded performance expectations, contributing to a projected $105 million in licensed revenue for the full year. Meanwhile, Baldur’s Gate 3 is expected to generate approximately $30 million in 2024, following its significant $90 million contribution in the previous year. Combined, these two titles are forecasted to deliver $135 million in licensed revenue for the company throughout 2024.
Looking ahead, Hasbro is doubling down on its digital ambitions by investing $1 billion into internal game development. The company is actively expanding its studio capacity to support upcoming projects, including titles such as Exodus, a G.I. Joe-themed game, and an untitled Dungeons & Dragons project. To bolster this strategy, the company has appointed former Blizzard executive John Hight as president of Wizards of the Coast to oversee the development of its core franchises. These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to leveraging digital partnerships and internal production to sustain long-term brand growth.
