This growth highlights the region's expanding influence in the global mobile economy. Europe now accounts for 13% of total worldwide app revenue.
European mobile app spending reached $2.85 billion in the third quarter of 2019, marking a 17.6 percent year-over-year increase. This growth highlights the region's expanding influence in the global mobile economy, where it now accounts for 13 percent of total worldwide app revenue. The data, derived from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform, encompasses consumer spending on in-app purchases, subscriptions, and premium apps across both the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Market performance varied by platform and geography. The App Store generated $1.5 billion in revenue, representing 54.1 percent of the total, while Google Play accounted for $1.3 billion. Conversely, Google Play dominated in terms of volume, driving 4.4 billion of the 6.1 billion total unique installs recorded during the quarter. Great Britain emerged as the leading revenue generator at $543.2 million, followed closely by Germany at $521.6 million. Russia led the region in total download volume with 1.3 billion installs.
The gaming sector remained a primary driver of this economic activity, contributing $1.9 billion—or 66.2 percent—of total European app revenue. Unlike the global market, where Apple’s App Store typically leads in gaming revenue, European Android users spent more on mobile games, with Google Play capturing 55.9 percent of the gaming market share. Top-performing titles included Coin Master, which led in revenue, and Fun Race 3D, which topped the download charts. These findings underscore a robust, double-digit growth trajectory for the European mobile ecosystem, characterized by strong consumer engagement across both major operating systems.
