This study investigates the impact of social interaction on player experience by comparing flow states during individual versus co-operative gameplay. The research aims to determine whether the collaborative nature of co-operative play enhances or diminishes the holistic sensation of flow, defined as the state of deep involvement where a player’s skills are balanced with the task's challenges. The study focuses on the puzzle genre, utilizing a custom-developed PC game, Droppit, to measure differences in total flow and its constituent elements.
The methodology involved a between-groups experiment with 50 participants, split evenly between single-player and co-operative conditions. Participants were assessed using the Long Flow State Scale (FFS-2) following a 25-minute gameplay session. The findings indicate that co-operative gameplay induces significantly higher levels of total flow compared to single-player sessions. Specifically, co-operative participants reported superior outcomes in three key areas: challenge-skill balance, unambiguous feedback, and transformation of time. Additionally, co-operative play was associated with a higher autotelic experience, suggesting that the collaborative environment makes the activity more inherently rewarding and enjoyable.
The results suggest that the presence of a partner may facilitate better interpretation of game feedback and provide mutual encouragement, which helps players maintain a sense of control and engagement. While the study is limited to a single puzzle-based title, the findings provide evidence that co-operative mechanics can effectively foster flow by mitigating the frustration of being stuck and enhancing the overall sense of progress. The research concludes that social interaction, when structured as a collaborative effort, serves as a catalyst for deeper engagement and more positive emotional outcomes in digital gaming.
