Create free accountlast year i challenged you to make games with intentional bugs and you delivered over 300 excellent broken video games broken animations crazy glitchy food trucks being able to jump on boxes you're holding in your hands but what probably excites me the most is that now more than one year later some of you are still working on their games what you see here is outer bounds by water lemon a game about glitching through walls now one year later it looks like this way more polished way more content i absolutely love it in this video we'll have a closer look at another team who's still working on their buggy mess of a game i'll attempt to beat them in an epic speed running challenge the losing team will have to bite into a lemon by the way huawei gem 3.0 is coming up so we're doing the same thing this year again with a new topic of course you'll have one weekend to make a game starting february 26th sign up now let's get right into the news so you are the crazy people who are still working on their mess of a game one year later oh yes we are
yeah yeah so last year during wowi jump 2 they made a game called glitchy on a metroidvania where every time you get a new ability you break the game further now they spent an entire year on improving their game and it looks absolutely amazing wasn't exactly planned that way i basically heard of the game jam uh joined the discord server and then said hey does anyone want to team up and two the two moderators joined yeah that's nice what were we planning in the beginning like naively thinking well one thing's for sure you didn't expect me to challenge you to a speed running competition in your own game the rules are simple whichever team can produce the fastest time aka finish the game the fastest wins the losing team will bite into a lemon comply so yes it will happen and it will be you now three developers versus one outsiders not exactly fair so we decided that they have to play on a higher difficulty i'll play on the easiest one if you want to try to beat me there's a link to the game in the description at the moment it's still entirely free
may the best speedrunner win okay i changed my character to jonas so i started with a couple of simple practice runs just to get a hang of it as you can see the glacion team added a little feature to make sure you can always see who's playing here we go i'm gonna go right this time the timer starts now okay look at that that is how the beginning of the game looked like one year ago and this is how it looks like now that's what the scene looks like from a dev point of view and i should say like this looks a little strange because actually we have a lot of those as an example of how far we went like in the game jam version most of the background was just gray like solid gray we now have 3d models with spatial sound effects in the background of our game yeah so like everywhere we could do it we did more than we should have why did you eventually decide to spend an entire year on polishing like why why just why just polishing yeah what's what's the alternative
making a ton more levels that all look kind of samey and boring i've always wanted to try speedrunning to kind of understand the appeal of it a little more so this was the perfect opportunity for me luckily the beginning of the game is relatively simple you just go to this console and unlock your first ability which is creating these error message platforms you can jump on you go dodge some enemies yada yada yada unlock your next ability which is this epic blast holy moly i must have added an extra zero somewhere and then comes the difficult part of the demo where i messed up most of my runs here you have to use the blast to catapult yourself forward over giant cliffs there are tons of enemies the platforming gets harder and harder i'm pressing f for yen and barnacle who have to play this on the highest difficulty in hard mode you can just kind of oh no that's that was not intended but i'll take it i'll probably die here anyway now okay there's that ah see like i die anyway i for my part finished my first real run in 517
seconds which on a leaderboard for first runs would put me here river off to an amazing start with 225 seconds jonas on the second place with more than double that time and yen and barnacles really struggling with that highest difficulty setting here but remember only the fastest time will count so this is still anybody's game oh jonas is trying again he's climbing the stairs rubbing the checkpoint real quick amazing time so far nice shortcut with the platform now coming up jonas will probably make his classic move just completely eating the drone shot to the face then dropping a platform below manual unfortunately can't do that strategy he's playing on the highest difficulty meaning he has only a single life and they got him let's see how river handles the situation on the medium difficulty marvelous river seems very confident i think he got this oh look at that what is jen doing i don't think you're supposed to go there wait wait wait wait wait is he actually no he's grabbing the hell's upgrade i mean he's clearly just showing off at this point and the audience doesn't like it this is like actually accurate with the spacing and stuff so you see kind of just the bottom of the city you can see it kind of peeking through the window and then when you get
here you can see the full faint and then when you get up here in a little secret area you can actually see the the entire whole thing what happened with your team is probably statistically speaking very very unlikely right that a team finds each other in a game gym and then keeps working on the game right after it just felt like there was synergy there that i really didn't want to give up and i think that's why i was pushing to keep going here in the background we have the original 3d background that we made to kind of test out the 3d stuff that we've got going on in the game we have this little turbine and the cylinder all the textures on it are hand-painted with photoshop and then mapped onto the cylinder and then we have some extra lighting in here as well with uh with those lamps like emitting an additive um array of sprites basically these are just flat the background definitely looks nice here but this area ruined so many of my runs [Music]
ah why do i forget the button every single time then i finally had a good run i made it past the gap on my first try my time was looking really good at this point are you kidding me there's another part in the game where you have to do the same thing again and i barely made it and then the last time you have to make this jump i obviously messed it up but i'm happy to report that at least i wasn't the only one this is where i keep dying today and i don't know why i keep losing so much time here all right that's better that's better oh no i just it's my bane today all right in general i think it's safe to say that the devs had the better strategy for crossing these gaps now if we can get this first try that would be epic we got it first try all right so here's the final leaderboard unfortunately yen placed last with 430 seconds barnacle's best time ended up being
337 seconds the first place goes to here we can see rivers and jonah's best runs right next to each other who will be the fastest excellent question only one of them can take the victory today and the other team will have to take a nice big bite into a lime yeah a little bit of a lame punishment if you ask me but obviously you still don't want to be that long and that i think jonas is pulling ahead he's jumping over the drones river has to backtrack because he's playing on a higher difficulty and jonas will clearly reach the stairs here first oh jonathan extending his sleep further and further river really has to hurry up if he wants to compete they're like four to five seconds between them that is absolutely huge they are both at the jump pads now it feels like jonas is extending his lead further and further obviously he doesn't have as many enemies in his way so perhaps that makes it a little easier for him oh my god what is ripper doing here he is completely skipping the entire section can you believe it he has now overtaken jonas jonas still making his way over to the three jump heads on the left oh no what is river doing he's giving up a lot of valuable time he just died and he died again can you believe it oh this is incredible jonas made it already past river again
he's now on the other side again he's throwing this game yeah jonas is just miles ahead at this point this seems completely beyond repair i think jonas got this i think you're absolutely right they're not even in the same part of the game anymore but here comes another very difficult jump for jonas can he make it oh no he doesn't make it that is a big problem because rivers already on his way and he's just blazing through this area did they just both make it to the last room at the same time i think they did oh no jonas boosted himself in the wrong direction he cannot afford to do that at this point do you think jonas will still be able to catch up because i really don't know man river seems very confident i only have one health i can't die to that okay i'm good i'm good the only saving grace here might be that he has to dodge a couple more enemies and in fact they're both climbing this at the same time this is the end of the game that is unbelievable oh my god at that time ladies and gentlemen unbelievable i have never seen anything like this i can't believe i lost by so little remember if you want to have some fun making games as well and you're watching
this before february 26 2021 then go sign up to huawei gem 3 it's going to be absolutely epic although the glitchy on team would be very happy if you want to try out their game you can play it right in your browser you don't even have to download anything i don't wanna i really don't want to so obviously this was a little bit of a different video but i thought it was very fun to have a look at how a game from wowi gem 2 is doing and i hope you enjoyed it too
This analysis examines the evolution of indie game development through the lens of a speedrunning competition featuring Glitcheon, a title originally created during a community game jam. The primary objective is to evaluate the long-term development trajectory of projects born from short-term game jams and to demonstrate the technical and aesthetic improvements made by developers over a one-year period. The competition serves as a case study in how small, collaborative teams can transition from rapid prototyping to sustained, iterative polishing.
Key findings highlight the significant transformation of Glitcheon from its initial, minimalist jam version to a more complex, feature-rich product. The developers replaced placeholder assets with 3D models, implemented spatial audio, and refined level design through hand-painted textures and advanced lighting techniques. The competition data illustrates the impact of difficulty scaling on gameplay, as participants navigated varying levels of environmental hazards and enemy density. Despite the developers’ intimate knowledge of their own mechanics, the speedrunning challenge revealed that high-difficulty settings significantly increased the margin for error, leading to intense, closely contested finishes where seconds determined the outcome.
The scope of this analysis covers the indie game development ecosystem, specifically focusing on community-driven events like the Wowie Jam. The methodology relies on a comparative performance analysis between the original jam-version of the game and its updated iteration, alongside a live speedrunning trial involving multiple developers. The results underscore the rarity and value of team synergy in sustaining long-term development, suggesting that successful post-jam projects often rely on strong interpersonal collaboration and a commitment to iterative refinement over simply expanding content volume. The findings conclude that even games built on intentional, chaotic mechanics can achieve high levels of polish and competitive viability through dedicated, long-term development cycles.
