Arcade fighters account for 71% of all fighting game hours watched. This is despite representing only about half of the titles sampled.
The fighting game genre has experienced a significant surge in live streaming viewership, primarily driven by the release of Street Fighter 6 in June 2023. This title consistently generates over 40 million quarterly hours watched, fundamentally shifting the genre's performance metrics. While platform fighters like Brawlhalla and Multiversus previously influenced viewership spikes, the current landscape is dominated by arcade fighters. In a sample of 77 fighting games analyzed between July 2024 and June 2025, arcade fighters accounted for 71% of total viewership, with Street Fighter 6 alone responsible for three-quarters of that subgenre's engagement.
The analysis highlights a notable migration of viewership toward YouTube Gaming, which captured over 25% of the genre's total audience in the second quarter of 2025, up from less than 20% prior to the launch of Street Fighter 6. This trend is attributed to the platform's popularity among Japanese streamers and VTubers. Despite this shift, the esports ecosystem remains a critical driver of engagement. Multi-game tournaments, particularly the EVO series, are essential for community growth, as they expose fans of one franchise to other titles, facilitating cross-pollination within the highly loyal fighting game community.
The data suggests that for publishers, success in this space requires more than just high-quality gameplay; it necessitates strategic influencer partnerships and participation in multi-game events. Because the fighting game community is tight-knit and difficult for newcomers to penetrate, leveraging established streamers who advocate for the genre as a whole is a key tactic for driving brand awareness and player conversion.
