The fine was for failing to disclose a conflict of interest. This action was a breach of the Louvre Agreement.
The ESL Pro League, a division of the ESL FACEIT Group, has sanctioned the esports organization Astralis with a $100,000 USD fine for failing to disclose a conflict of interest. The penalty stems from unauthorized communications between Nicolai ‘HUNDEN’ Petersen and Astralis while Petersen was still under contract as the head coach for the organization Heroic in 2021. This action represents a breach of the Louvre Agreement, a legally binding covenant governing the relationship between the tournament operator and its partner teams.
The investigation was initiated in January 2023 following reports regarding the breach of partnership regulations. ESL utilized independent experts to conduct the inquiry, ultimately determining that Astralis violated the governance standards expected of its members. While the fine was levied against the organization, ESL did not issue individual sanctions against Petersen, noting that previous disciplinary actions against him by the Esports Integrity Commission had already been addressed.
Astralis leadership expressed disappointment with the verdict but confirmed their acceptance of the decision and their commitment to cooperating with the investigation process. The ESL Pro League Commissioner emphasized that the sanction serves to uphold the integrity of the league and reassure participants and fans of the organization's commitment to fair play. Both parties indicated an interest in reviewing and potentially evolving the Louvre Agreement to ensure it continues to reflect industry best practices for professional conduct and regulatory discipline.
