European Conference on Games Based Learning (ECGBL)
The study was motivated by the difficulty educators face in selecting among the many theories used in gamification and serious game research.
This study proposes an integrative framework for game-based learning (GBL) that aligns game design elements with established learning theories to enhance student engagement and knowledge retention. Motivated by the difficulty educators face in selecting among the many theories used in gamification and serious game research, the authors conducted a systematic literature review of recent work published between 2020 and 2025. The search drew primarily on Google Scholar, supplemented by the Elicit AI research assistant, and narrowed an initial pool of 50 articles to 10 highly cited Q1 and Q2 journal articles for in-depth thematic synthesis, with additional manual searches to capture seminal works.
The review organises GBL-relevant theories into motivational, learning-process, and cognitive-load categories, including Self-Determination Theory, Flow Theory, Goal Setting Theory, Constructivist and Situated Learning, Cognitive Load Theory, and Experiential and Discovery Learning. Tables map design elements such as feedback, scaffolding, spaced repetition, narrative, progression, collaboration, personalisation, real-world linkages, and tangible rewards to either knowledge retention or engagement outcomes. The synthesis argues that adaptive challenge that balances difficulty against skill, personalised feedback, and real-world relevance are central levers for sustaining both engagement and retention.
The authors are explicit that the framework is purely theoretical, drawing on a small literature sample and presenting no empirical validation of its effectiveness. The study therefore calls for randomised and controlled trials to test the model, along with research on long-term outcomes such as completion rates and replayability across diverse educational contexts, age groups, and emerging technologies such as augmented reality.
