The restructuring also involved significant project and studio closures.
Between 2023 and 2025, Embracer Group underwent a massive corporate restructuring that resulted in the loss of approximately 7,800 jobs, representing over 50% of its total workforce. This period of contraction saw the closure of 44 studios and the cancellation of 80 in-development gaming projects. The primary catalyst for this collapse was the failure of a $2 billion investment deal in mid-2023, which exposed the company’s unsustainable debt levels and the risks associated with its rapid, aggressive acquisition strategy that saw the purchase of over 60 companies between 2020 and 2022.
The restructuring process involved several significant phases, including the divestiture of major subsidiaries like Saber Interactive and Gearbox Entertainment, which accounted for nearly 2,950 of the total job losses. Other notable impacts included the closure of long-standing studios such as Volition and Piranha Bytes, as well as the cancellation of high-profile projects like a new Deus Ex title. These actions were driven by a combination of bloated project pipelines, underperforming commercial releases, and a shift in market conditions that prioritized financial stability over the rapid growth model the company previously pursued.
The broader gaming industry felt the effects of these layoffs through significant talent displacement and a shift in publisher strategy toward more conservative, profitability-focused operations. In response to these challenges, the company is currently pivoting toward a decentralized structure, with plans to split into three distinct, publicly traded entities by the end of 2025: Fellowship Entertainment, Coffee Stain & Friends, and Asmodee Group. This reorganization aims to restore investor confidence and improve operational efficiency by focusing on core franchises and community-driven titles rather than the previous strategy of unchecked expansion.
