Designing Attention-Driven Play: A Multi-Genre Suite of BCI Games
Key insights
7 takeaways- 01NeuroTune provides a unified, cross-platform software suite for SSVEP-based BCI gaming, featuring three distinct genres: the narrative puzzle MazeMind, the endless runner NeuroDash, and the asymmetric multiplayer game CogniConnect4.See it on page 6
- 02The platform utilizes the Lab Streaming Layer (LSL) as a standard interface, enabling compatibility with multiple consumer-grade EEG headsets like the g.tec Unicorn Hybrid Black and Emotiv EPOC X to eliminate vendor lock-in.See it on page 2
- 03To address individual differences in cortical response and visual comfort, the suite includes an optional, user-initiated calibration module that optimizes flicker frequency, stimulus color, and patterns.See it on page 5
- 04The architecture separates the Python-based signal processing and classification backend from the Electron-based frontend, allowing for modular updates and ensuring that time-sensitive EEG operations do not interfere with UI rendering.See it on page 3
- 05The system employs Filter Bank Canonical Correlation Analysis (FBCCA) for signal processing, converting EEG-detected target frequencies into symbolic game actions via local WebSockets.See it on page 3
- 06The suite emphasizes game feel and accessibility by incorporating cohesive pixel art, responsive feedback, and adjustable 'Read Time' settings to accommodate the slower cadence of neural input in strategy games.See it on page 5
- 07By using standard web technologies and a shared stimuli library, the platform allows third-party developers to integrate new games without requiring specialized knowledge of proprietary game engines or hardware SDKs.See it on page 2
