Rehabit:Swim: Designing a Motion-Sensing Exergame for Bed-Rest Rehabilitation
Key insights
6 takeaways- 01Rehabit:Swim is a motion-sensing exergame designed to improve patient adherence to bed-rest rehabilitation by transforming repetitive exercises—specifically Biceps Curls, Shoulder Presses, Straight Leg Raises, and Knee Extensions—into an immersive ocean exploration experience.See it on page 6
- 02The system utilizes commercially available IMU sensors and a touchscreen interface to track joint angles and angular velocity, eliminating the need for expensive, specialized clinical hardware.See it on page 3
- 03A prescription-based multi-user architecture allows clinicians to set personalized exercise parameters and review performance logs, creating a cyclical process of prescription, performance, recording, and adjustment.See it on page 4
- 04The game provides real-time, intuitive feedback on movement accuracy using performance grades (Perfect, Good, Bad) to help patients connect physical effort directly to in-game progress.See it on page 5
- 05The design incorporates 'emotional-experience' elements, such as bright-toned natural imagery, to mitigate the stress and anxiety associated with the confined environment of a hospital room.See it on page 5
- 06While the prototype demonstrates the feasibility of using IMU-based inputs for rehabilitation, it currently lacks clinical verification and requires further content development, such as expanded storylines and quests, to sustain long-term patient engagement.See it on page 3
