Square Enix Holdings
The consolidated financial results for Square Enix Holdings for the six-month period ending September 30, 2010, reflect a significant downturn in performance compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. The primary objective of this report is to provide a transparent account of the company’s financial position and operational results, which were characterized by substantial declines across key profitability metrics. Net sales fell by 24.8% to 68,056 million yen, while operating income dropped by 56.4% to 5,712 million yen. Recurring income and net income also saw sharp decreases of 71.1% and 35.8%, respectively.
The company operates through four primary segments: Digital Entertainment, Amusement, Publication, and Merchandising. The Digital Entertainment segment, which includes console, PC, and mobile gaming, generated 35,178 million yen in net sales and 6,482 million yen in operating income, bolstered by million-selling titles such as Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 and Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days. Conversely, the Amusement segment faced ongoing challenges due to difficult market conditions affecting facility operations. The Publication and Merchandising segments provided stable contributions, with the former benefiting from successful anime adaptations of popular comic titles.
Financial management during this period involved the adoption of new accounting standards, including those for asset retirement obligations and equity method accounting, which impacted reported income figures. Despite the overall decline in earnings, the company maintained a solid financial position with total assets of 255,732 million yen and an equity ratio of 58.1%. Management confirmed that full-year consolidated forecasts for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, remain unchanged from previous projections, as the group continues to focus on leveraging its diverse content portfolio across expanding digital platforms.
