Capcom
The Capcom financial report for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010, details a period of strong growth driven primarily by the company’s Home Video Game segment. During this six-month period, net sales reached 38,892 million yen, representing a significant increase over the 31,236 million yen recorded in the same period of the previous year. Operating income also saw substantial growth, rising to 5,574 million yen from 3,357 million yen. These results exceeded internal projections, largely due to the successful performance of the Monster Hunter series and effective company-wide cost-cutting initiatives, which helped offset delays in certain software launches and weaker-than-expected results in the Pachinko and Pachislo business.
Geographically, the company’s performance was mixed. Japan remained the primary driver of profitability, benefiting from the popularity of key titles. Europe also showed positive momentum with increased sales and earnings. Conversely, the North American market experienced lower profitability, attributed to the underperformance of titles developed by overseas subsidiaries.
The balance sheet reflects a strengthened financial position, characterized by a significant increase in cash reserves resulting from the collection of trade receivables and the repayment of short-term debt. Furthermore, the company reached a mutual agreement with Japanese and U.S. tax authorities regarding a long-standing transfer pricing dispute. This resolution is expected to eliminate double taxation and contribute approximately 2 billion yen to earnings in the third quarter through tax refunds. Overall, the results demonstrate a robust recovery and improved operational efficiency, despite volatility in specific international markets and business segments.
