Activision Blizzard reported strong financial performance for the second quarter of 2023, driven primarily by record-breaking sales within its Blizzard Entertainment segment. The company achieved total net revenues of $2.21 billion, representing a 34.8% increase over the $1.64 billion recorded during the same period in 2022. Net income for the quarter reached $587 million, a 109.6% year-over-year increase from the $280 million reported in the second quarter of 2022.
The Blizzard Entertainment segment was the primary catalyst for this growth, generating $1.05 billion in revenue—a 160% increase compared to the previous year—largely due to the successful launch of Diablo IV, which attracted over 10 million players in June. Conversely, the Activision Publishing segment reported $574 million in revenue, a 17% year-over-year increase supported by the Call of Duty franchise, which has seen lifetime spending on its mobile iteration surpass $3 billion. The King segment contributed $747 million in revenue, a 9% increase driven by the Candy Crush franchise.
Across its three business segments, the company maintained a total base of 361 million monthly active users. Despite the overall financial success, the company is navigating structural changes within its esports division, including layoffs and new participation terms for the Overwatch League, which offer teams a $6 million termination fee. As of the end of the second quarter, the company held a net cash position of approximately $9.5 billion while awaiting the finalization of its acquisition by Microsoft.
