Mobile Dev Memo
Users can now engage with app content via a virtual machine without needing to download the application first.
It's like test-driving a car without having to buy it first.
Key Change. Google's app streaming allows users to access app content directly from mobile search results without downloading.
Google's November 2015 rollout of app streaming in mobile search lets users enter an app without downloading it, using a streamed instance served from a virtual machine. The feature indexes app content in search results and is initially limited to a select group of partners, including HotelTonight, which also piloted Google's deep-linking initiative. The central thesis is that removing the download step could reshape freemium and premium dynamics in the mobile app economy.
The argument rests on the download being the only real friction point in freemium product acquisition on mobile, and one of the main differences between mobile and desktop. Eliminating it lowers switching costs between freemium products, since users can move between search results and apps without the mental load of judging whether an app fits their need or offers features competitors lack. That mental load, driven by the opportunity cost of navigating app store pages and waiting for downloads, is one reason users consider paying for a premium app instead of risking a poor freemium fit. If users can instantly test several free apps, they become less likely to research paid alternatives, which implies downward pressure on the premium app model.
Further upside depends on Google extending streaming to users on mobile data rather than only Wi-Fi. That would let people in developing markets, where data costs are often prohibitively high, participate more meaningfully in the app economy. The piece also frames streaming as an evolution of Google's earlier "App Trials" program, announced more than a year before, which never materially materialized. Streaming goes further by sidestepping the download entirely before a user tests an app's use case. The analysis is qualitative and speculative, with no survey data or quantitative metrics, and focuses on the global mobile app ecosystem, particularly Android and Google Search.
