Globalization and declining traditional knowledge transmission put the oral narratives and textile practices of the Ao tribe at risk. Static documentation is insufficient for preservation.
The preservation of intangible cultural heritage, specifically the oral narratives embedded in the traditional textile practices of the Ao tribe in Nagaland, India, requires a transition from static documentation to interactive digital engagement. By leveraging gamification, this initiative addresses the critical risk of cultural erosion caused by globalization and the decline of traditional knowledge transmission. The core objective is to bridge the generational divide by providing Gen Z learners with an immersive, technology-driven platform that validates tribal history while ensuring the authentic dissemination of weaving techniques and ancestral stories.
The research establishes a robust framework by integrating instructional design models with game mechanics such as progression systems, narrative-driven quests, and interactive puzzles. Empirical data gathered from 157 participants confirms that while younger generations maintain a strong interest in their cultural identity, they require modern, accessible formats to overcome existing barriers to traditional knowledge. The resulting prototype, titled Woven Memoir, demonstrates high efficacy in usability testing, with participants reporting positive engagement and intuitive navigation. These findings suggest that digital archives, when designed through a user-centered, design-thinking approach, serve as effective educational tools for cultural preservation.
Future development of this system focuses on refining the application within the Unity engine and fostering community co-creation to maintain long-term cultural authenticity. By grounding the project in established theoretical frameworks like the MDA model and self-determination theory, the initiative provides a scalable blueprint for safeguarding indigenous heritage globally. This synthesis of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary game design offers a sustainable solution for protecting intangible expressions, ensuring that the cultural significance of artifacts like the Tsungkutepsu warrior shawl remains relevant for future generations.
