The studio aims to create 'Artemis,' a massive digital space designed to host hundreds of thousands of players.
Project Scope. The studio's long-term vision is to create an Earth-sized virtual world called 'Artemis'.
Brendan Greene, the creator of the battle royale genre, is currently leading PlayerUnknown Productions in Amsterdam on an ambitious, long-term project to develop a massive, open-world digital space. The studio’s ultimate goal is to build Artemis, an Earth-sized virtual environment where hundreds of thousands of players can create and interact without traditional constraints. This endeavor relies on the development of a proprietary engine, Melba, and the heavy integration of machine learning agents to procedurally generate content at a scale impossible for human labor alone.
The studio has faced significant operational challenges, including high staff turnover and difficulties in aligning team output with Greene’s unconventional vision. Greene acknowledges that his lack of formal management experience contributed to these early struggles, leading him to hire David Polfeldt, the former managing director of Ubisoft Massive, as a consultant. Polfeldt’s role is to stabilize the studio’s internal processes, improve communication, and ensure the team’s technical execution matches the project’s lofty creative ambitions.
The project is framed as a 10- to 15-year research-heavy initiative rather than a standard game development cycle. The team is currently working on a tech demo titled Prologue, which serves as a testing ground for the procedural generation systems that will eventually power the larger Artemis world. While the project incorporates elements often associated with the metaverse, the studio emphasizes a commitment to open-source technology and decentralization, aiming to provide a platform that empowers users to create and monetize their own content. The initiative represents a departure from traditional triple-A development, prioritizing systemic innovation over conventional production methods.
