Distilling the key insights…
The analysis explores the distinct representation of death within artistic video games, contrasting these portrayals with the instrumental, rule-based approach found in mainstream gaming. While conventional games typically utilize death as a mechanical reset, a penalty for failure, or a metric for competition, artistic games elevate the motif to a profound, often irrational, and emotionally resonant experience. By shifting the focus away from gameplay loops and player control, these works restore the cultural weight of death, transforming it from a mere game-over screen into a subject of philosophical and existential reflection.
The study examines three independent titles—Passage, The Graveyard, and Queers in Love at the End of the World—to illustrate how diverse formal strategies can redefine the player’s relationship with mortality. Passage employs a symbolic approach, using a side-scrolling structure to allegorize the progression of life and the inevitability of the end. The Graveyard utilizes a material focus, forcing the player to confront the stillness and helplessness associated with death through the loss of agency. Queers in Love at the End of the World emphasizes the emotional intensity of final moments, using a hyper-textual, time-pressured format to highlight the gravity of loss.
Methodologically, the research relies on a qualitative analysis of these specific titles, contextualized by broader cultural theories regarding the taboo and social perception of death. The scope encompasses the intersection of game studies and cultural theory, focusing on how limited, non-traditional mechanics in independent games can provoke meta-discursive engagement. Ultimately, the findings suggest that artistic games successfully transcend the standard "death as a norm" paradigm, offering players a unique, distanced, yet deeply personal space to contemplate the human condition and the finality of life.
