The ads intentionally diverge from the core game experience.
It's like a movie trailer that tells a completely different story than the film itself, but still gets you to watch.
Key Strategy. Lily’s Garden employs highly dramatic, narrative ads that diverge from its match-3 gameplay to drive viral engagement.
Lily's Garden, a match-3 puzzle game from Danish developer Tactile Games, built its growth on deliberately bizarre, soap-opera-style video ads, and this analysis examines why that approach works. Using AppMagic data, the game has reached 70 million downloads across iOS and Android and generated more than $350 million in revenue. The thesis is that story-driven, shock-value creative, largely disconnected from actual gameplay, creates the emotional investment and viral discussion that fuel installs.
The ads feature melodramatic plots such as a faked pregnancy, family betrayals, and heavy use of innuendo and double entendres that stay within ad network rules by avoiding explicit content. One ad drew more than 300,000 YouTube views, and the game's "Confusing Universe" channel compiles out-of-order episodes that fans piece into timelines. Large creators, including The Game Theorists, have analyzed the ads, which amplifies brand awareness. The game's writer has said the ads were produced by a separate company and fabricated for virality. Players also comment on Lily's Instagram as though she were a real person.
The psychology rests on audiences' attraction to drama, escapism, and parasocial connection, which mirrors the appeal of soap operas and reality TV. Demographically, Statista figures cited show 55% of mobile gamers are women, with an average gamer age of 34. Lily's Garden targets women over 30 with mature relationship themes rather than cute, pastel content.
Creative variety broadens reach. Many Facebook ads pair a narrative opening with a mini-game or match-3 puzzle, appealing to both escapism-driven and cognitive-challenge players, and typically end in a staged failure. A mini-game ad with a thirsty horse exceeded 800,000 impressions. A late-2022 influencer campaign with Lindsay Lohan uses low-production, casual-looking video, a trend also seen with other match-3 titles. Across all variants, story remains the central hook.
