Over 75% of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S sales in the UK were for disc-based consoles.
Despite years of predictions that games are headed toward an all-digital future, physical media remains more resilient than commonly assumed, particularly in the UK console market. This January 2021 analysis from Sparkers argues that the decline of the physical format will likely be slower than expected, drawing mainly on ISFE's Games Sales Data (GSD) alongside third-party forecasts and company disclosures.
The evidence for digital dominance is substantial. Over 75% of combined PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S sales in the UK were for the disc-based model, yet 69% of FIFA 21 sales by value in its launch week were downloads. Across the first three quarters of 2020, physical accounted for just 25% of units and 32% of value among 18 major publishers sharing digital data. Sony reported physical at 41% of PlayStation game sales in Q2 2020, down from 55% a year earlier, with digital sources reaching 77% of PlayStation revenue. Goldman Sachs projects digital at 80% of global game sales by 2025, while Omdia forecasts cloud gaming revenue rising to $4 billion in 2021 and $12 billion by 2025. Xbox Game Pass is approaching 20 million members.
Counterpoints support physical's staying power. Much digital volume is back-catalogue; for new releases in the first two weeks, physical held 41% of units and value. Q4 2019 physical reached 57% of units and 60% of value, and Q4 supplies over 40% of annual physical sales. Limited console storage (667GB usable on PS5, 364GB on Series S) against 100–200GB games, the speed of disc installs, 4K Blu-ray playback, resale, ownership, collecting, and game preservation all favor discs. Rising $69.99 pricing strengthens the resale argument, and console digital prices are often higher than physical because of closed storefronts and aggressive retailers like Amazon.
Pressures remain, including bigger day-one patches, development delays, subscription models suited to sharing-economy-minded millennials, and pandemic-driven retail and delivery strain that favors downloads. The authors conclude that physical will persist, anchored by holiday demand and consumer preference for options, though outside Q4 publishers may eventually consider digital-only releases.
