Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) policies hindered traditional user acquisition strategies.
The mobile gaming industry in 2022 was defined by significant structural shifts, primarily driven by Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) policies. These privacy changes hindered traditional user acquisition (UA) strategies, contributing to a 6.4% year-on-year contraction in the global mobile market. Consequently, developers faced increased difficulty in scaling new titles, with only eight new releases reaching the top 200 grossing charts on the iOS US market during the year, compared to over 20 releases from the previous two-year period.
To navigate this challenging landscape, developers increasingly relied on established intellectual property (IP) to secure organic downloads and attract high-spending players. Data indicates that high-value users are nearly three times more likely to engage with games based on familiar franchises. Beyond IP reliance, studios adopted creative design strategies to bolster retention and engagement. This included the integration of diverse minigames—such as the "Save the Doge" mode in X-Hero—to diversify gameplay and improve UA performance, as well as the implementation of competitive, leaderboard-based events in genres where competition was not previously a primary focus.
Finally, the industry saw a strategic pivot toward out-of-app monetization. To mitigate the impact of platform commission fees, major publishers began directing players to external web stores, often offering exclusive currencies or better value propositions to incentivize direct transactions. While this approach currently requires significant resources and is primarily utilized by larger studios, it represents a growing trend in response to the tightening margins and regulatory pressures surrounding mobile app store ecosystems.
