Stream Hatchet
Developers and publishers are increasingly using the 'Souls-like' label to capture audience attention.
Label usage. The 'Souls-like' tag on Steam has seen a significant increase from 55 games in 2019 to 375 games in 2024.
The Souls-like subgenre has become a dominant force in the gaming industry, characterized by high-difficulty action RPG gameplay, soul-collecting mechanics, and environmental storytelling. While the term is increasingly used as a marketing label to capture audience attention, the genre’s performance on live streaming platforms reveals a distinct pattern of high initial interest followed by rapid viewership decline. Data indicates that the number of games tagged as Souls-like on platforms like Steam has surged from 55 in 2019 to 375 in 2024, reflecting a broader industry trend of publishers leveraging the genre's prestige to drive engagement.
Analysis of live streaming metrics shows that FromSoftware remains the benchmark for the genre, with Elden Ring generating 210 million hours watched in its first 30 days, significantly outperforming other titles. Most Souls-like games experience a sharp drop in viewership, often retaining only 1–2% of their debut monthly watch time by the second month. Elden Ring serves as a notable exception, maintaining long-term relevance through substantial DLC releases and high-profile marathon streams. Other titles, such as Lies of P, demonstrate that critical acclaim can help mitigate the typical post-launch viewership decay.
The industry also distinguishes between "Hard" Souls-likes, which adhere strictly to the genre's core mechanics, and "Soft" Souls-likes, which blend these elements with other genres to reach broader audiences. While Soft Souls-likes often achieve roughly half the watch time of their Hard counterparts, they represent a growing strategy for publishers to spark online discussion and cross-pollinate player segments. Despite concerns regarding market saturation and the dilution of the genre label, the consistent release of highly anticipated titles suggests that the Souls-like format remains a powerful tool for driving initial visibility on live streaming platforms.
