Mobile Dev Memo
The platform manages game development, distribution, currency, and advertising. This creates a unique opportunity for a highly measurable and privacy-compliant ad platform.
Roblox possesses the fundamental infrastructure to become a dominant force in gaming advertising, yet it currently underutilizes its unique position as an end-to-end ecosystem. By controlling the game development environment, distribution app store, native ad network, and internal currency, the platform is uniquely positioned to offer a transparent and highly effective advertising solution. However, the current system remains limited by opaque measurement tools and a rigid, non-standard bidding structure that hinders developer growth and campaign optimization.
The platform currently supports four ad units—banner, skyscraper, rectangle, and promoted game placement—which are purchased using Robux through a 24-hour auction system. Bidding is based on a total spend declaration rather than standard metrics like CPM or CPA, and performance tracking is restricted to click-through rates. Because the platform requires users to be logged in, it is technically capable of providing granular, privacy-compliant attribution from ad click to in-game conversion. The absence of such data forces developers to rely on inefficient, high-level regression models to estimate the impact of their advertising spend.
To evolve into a premier advertising platform, Roblox must modernize its infrastructure by implementing three key improvements: adopting standardized CPM bidding, allowing for flexible campaign scheduling beyond fixed 24-hour windows, and enabling campaign-level tracking of in-game conversions. These changes would allow developers to optimize for return on ad spend while maintaining user privacy. By leveraging its total control over the value chain, Roblox has the opportunity to significantly improve game discovery and monetization for its massive user base, which includes over half of all children in the United States.
