Road to Polaris: Gamecity Hamburg Indie Showcase

Gamecity Hamburg facilitates the promotion of local independent game developers through its Road to Polaris program, which provides a platform for studios to showcase their work at the Polaris convention in Hamburg. The initiative aims to increase the visibility of Hamburg-based game companies, foster industry networking, and provide public access to locally developed titles. By organizing delegation packages and booth space, the program supports developers in reaching broader audiences and establishing professional connections within the gaming and pop culture sectors.

The 2023 showcase featured five distinct indie titles: Reddie by Curvature Games, Beacon Patrol by Shapes and Dreams, About Cannons & Sparrows by Cannons + Sparrows, Light of Atlantis by DrownTown, and Turbo Shell by Radioactive Dreams. These games represent a diverse range of genres, including VR adventures, cooperative exploration, physics-based platformers, and puzzle-oriented metroidvanias. Notably, Light of Atlantis was recognized for its quality with a German Computer Game Award.

The broader Road to program serves as a recurring strategic effort by Gamecity Hamburg to integrate local developers into national and international industry events. By removing barriers to entry through free participation opportunities, the organization strengthens the regional gaming ecosystem. The Polaris convention itself serves as a significant venue for this outreach, spanning over 20,000 square meters and attracting approximately 150 exhibitors, thereby offering a substantial platform for Hamburg’s creative talent to engage with both the public and industry peers.
