Square Enix
The financial performance of Square Enix Holdings for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2012, reveals a significant shift from profitability to loss compared to the same period in the previous year. While net sales grew from 95.7 billion yen to 102.8 billion yen, the company reported an operating loss of 4.9 billion yen, a sharp decline from the 11.2 billion yen operating income recorded in the prior year. This downturn extended to recurring and net income, which fell to losses of 4.2 billion yen and 5.7 billion yen, respectively.
Segment analysis highlights that the Digital Entertainment division, the company’s primary revenue driver with 57.8 billion yen in sales, struggled to maintain profitability, posting an operating loss of 0.4 billion yen. The Amusement segment similarly faced challenges, recording an operating loss of 0.3 billion yen on 33.8 billion yen in sales. Conversely, the Publication and Merchandising segments remained profitable, contributing 2.0 billion yen and 0.4 billion yen in operating income, respectively.
Management attributes these results to the highly competitive nature of the global gaming market, where success is contingent upon consumer preferences, rapid technological evolution, and effective international expansion. Despite the nine-month deficit, the company maintained a full-year forecast projecting a return to profitability, with an anticipated operating income of 7.5 billion yen for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013. This recovery strategy relies on a robust release schedule, including major titles such as Tomb Raider, Dragon Quest VII, and Kingdom Hearts -HD 1.5 ReMIX-, alongside ongoing support for established franchises like Final Fantasy XI.
