Focus Entertainment’s fiscal year 2021/2022 results outline a strategic pivot from a traditional publishing and distribution model toward an integrated developer-publisher structure. The company’s primary objective is to increase its portfolio of owned and co-owned intellectual property (IP) to improve long-term profitability and margins. This transition is supported by an aggressive external growth strategy, characterized by the acquisition of four studios during the fiscal year, including Dotemu, Streum On Studio, Douze Dixièmes, and Leikir Studio.
Financial performance for the period ending March 31, 2022, reflected a challenging comparison against the previous year, which had been bolstered by pandemic-driven back-catalog sales. Revenue reached €142.6 million, a 17% decrease from the prior year, while consolidated net income fell to €3.1 million. Despite these declines, the company maintained a 30% gross margin and successfully raised €68.8 million in capital to fund its expansion. Intangible assets related to game development rose 18% to €79.4 million, underscoring the shift toward internal production.
The company’s roadmap includes a robust pipeline of 31 games scheduled for release by March 2025. While publishing activities remain a key pillar for generating immediate revenue in the AA and indie segments, the long-term strategy targets a 50% revenue contribution from owned IPs beyond 2025. This evolution is intended to drive higher EBITA and EBITDA rates through an improved product mix. The company continues to evaluate selective, transformative M&A opportunities to further accelerate this business model transition while maintaining strict investment criteria.
