It was grounded in behavioral science theories, including Bandura’s self-efficacy model.
The Movenator exergame functions as a pilot intervention designed to increase physical activity and self-efficacy among tweens in Finland. By grounding the software in behavioral science theories, such as Bandura’s self-efficacy model, the project aims to bridge the gap between serious health objectives and digital entertainment. However, the study reveals a significant disconnect between theoretical intent and practical execution, as the game fails to produce statistically significant improvements in physical activity levels or long-term behavioral changes among its target demographic.
Technical and design limitations represent the primary barriers to the game’s success. The platform’s exclusivity to Android, coupled with persistent technical instability, severely restricts user accessibility. Furthermore, an analysis utilizing the Octalysis framework indicates that the game relies too heavily on extrinsic motivators. Because the reward structures often allow for progress without requiring genuine physical exertion, the experience lacks the motivational depth necessary to sustain user interest. The absence of compelling narrative elements, clear goal-setting, and robust social features further diminishes the game’s ability to foster consistent engagement.
Ultimately, the findings underscore the necessity of a more rigorous, multi-disciplinary approach to the development of serious games. While the integration of creative building mechanics shows promise, the current iteration fails to balance health-oriented goals with engaging gameplay. Future interventions must prioritize objective testing and refined design strategies to ensure that gamification effectively translates into measurable health outcomes. The study serves as a cautionary case for developers, highlighting that a strong theoretical foundation is insufficient without seamless technical performance and a design architecture that intrinsically motivates users to remain active.
