Acquisition Fact. PGL acquired Esportal AB's matchmaking assets after the parent company filed for bankruptcy.
PGL, an international esports tournament organizer, has acquired the matchmaking assets of the Sweden-based company Esportal AB. This acquisition follows the July 2024 decision by Esportal Group AB to file for bankruptcy protection. While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the transaction specifically targets the online matchmaking platform for Counter-Strike and Dota 2, excluding other business units such as the Inferno Online Group gaming centers.
The primary objective of this acquisition is to support PGL’s strategic goal of developing a world-class, global matchmaking service. PGL plans to spend the next three to four months evaluating the platform’s existing technology and operations. This transition period will involve a comprehensive reorganization, potential rebranding, and necessary technical improvements to optimize the user experience before a formal relaunch.
During this interim phase, the Esportal platform will continue to operate for its user base. PGL has emphasized that it is currently in a discovery phase to identify areas for improvement and cleanup. Meanwhile, Esportal Group AB has clarified that all inquiries regarding prior business dealings, including those from former suppliers and vendors, must be directed to the appointed bankruptcy estate attorney rather than PGL. This move aligns with PGL’s broader expansion efforts, which include a $17 million commitment to Counter-Strike 2 ranked competitions scheduled for 2025 and 2026.
