MeChat, a free-to-play mobile dating simulator from PlayMe Studio released in 2021, is the subject of this analysis of how contemporary romance fiction conventions are harnessed to drive in-game purchases. The game blends a story-driven dating simulator with the interface of dating apps like Tinder and Bumble, offering over 200 storylines spanning sub-genres such as romantic comedy, BDSM erotica, and mafia and monster romance. These narratives follow familiar romantic patterns, notably the gradual build-up of tension through regular displays of affection.
The study finds that most dialogue choices in MeChat have little bearing on the story, but premium options, which require purchased in-game currency, unlock sexual encounters, confessions, affectionate moments, and otherwise inaccessible plot details. Selecting these options also raises a relationship strength index, so the narrative's satisfying outcomes are tied directly to payment. The analysis contends that this design links players' emotional investment in romance to consumer behavior, positioning emotional satisfaction itself as a commodity.
Interpreted through theories of affective capitalism and the commodification of emotion, the game is presented as an example of how digital games can reproduce ideas of love entangled with capitalist ideology, presenting love as a cycle of trial and satisfaction that is accessed through spending. The work is situated within love studies, research on microtransactions, and scholarship on parasocial relationships with game characters, and it draws on prior studies of in-game purchasing motivations and the commercial exploitation of game romance.
