Square Enix Holdings reported its financial results for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, reflecting a period of mixed performance characterized by a decline in net sales but resilient operating income across most business segments. The company recorded net sales of ¥157.5 billion, a year-over-year decrease of ¥14.5 billion, while operating income rose to ¥21.1 billion, an increase of ¥3.8 billion. Bottom-line results, including ordinary income and profit attributable to owners of the parent, were negatively impacted by ¥4.1 billion in foreign exchange losses.
The Digital Entertainment segment experienced a decline in net sales due to a lack of major title launches, though operating income improved by ¥1.3 billion to ¥16.8 billion. This growth was driven by the successful release of the Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail expansion, which bolstered the MMO sub-segment, and reduced development and advertising costs compared to the previous year. Conversely, the HD Game sub-segment reported an operating loss of ¥1.2 billion, largely attributed to the weaker-than-expected performance of Visions of Mana. Other segments, including Amusement, Publication, and Merchandising, generally showed stability or growth in both sales and profit, aligning with the company’s medium-term strategy to diversify earnings through strengthened customer contact points.
Looking ahead, the company is focusing on the performance of upcoming titles such as Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake and the new IP Emberstoria. Management remains cautious regarding the long-term sales trajectory of Life is Strange: Double Exposure following mixed initial reception. The company continues to prioritize the stability of its MMO offerings and the expansion of its catalog title sales across North America, Europe, and Asia to mitigate the volatility inherent in new game releases.
