Square Enix
Square Enix Holdings reported a decline in consolidated financial performance for the first nine months of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025. Net sales reached ¥248.5 billion, a year-over-year decrease of ¥9.1 billion, while operating income fell to ¥33.3 billion. These results represent the lowest figures for the company over the past three years, primarily driven by underperformance in the Digital Entertainment segment.
Within the Digital Entertainment segment, results were mixed across sub-segments. The HD Games division saw a decline in net sales due to a lack of major new releases compared to the previous year, though profitability improved as the performance of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake exceeded expectations, helping to offset the poor commercial reception of Life is Strange: Double Exposure. The MMO sub-segment experienced growth in both sales and profit, bolstered by the latest Final Fantasy XIV expansion. Conversely, the Games for Smart Devices/PC Browser sub-segment struggled significantly, recording substantial declines in sales and profit due to weak existing titles and valuation write-downs.
Other business segments provided more stability. The Amusement segment reported growth in both sales and profit, fueled by strong same-store sales and increased demand for amusement machines. The Merchandising segment also performed well, benefiting from high-value product sales and licensing revenue. While the Publication segment saw a slight dip in performance following the conclusion of a major anime-driven sales cycle, the underlying print and digital businesses remain firm. Management maintains its full-year guidance, noting that future profitability will depend on cost optimization and the continued leveraging of intellectual property across diverse entertainment experiences.
