Square Enix Holdings reported mixed financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024. While the company achieved net sales of ¥85.6 billion, representing a year-over-year increase of ¥10.8 billion, profitability declined significantly. Operating income fell by ¥11.4 billion to ¥3.0 billion, and profit attributable to owners of the parent dropped by ¥12.0 billion to ¥6.3 billion. These results reflect a period of high upfront investment costs, particularly within the Digital Entertainment segment.
The Digital Entertainment segment, the company’s primary revenue driver, saw net sales rise to ¥62.3 billion, bolstered by the release of major titles such as Final Fantasy XVI and the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series. However, operating income for this segment declined due to the amortization of development costs and significant advertising expenditures associated with these new launches. Conversely, the Amusement segment performed well, with net sales of ¥13.3 billion and operating income of ¥1.4 billion, driven by strong same-store sales. The Merchandising segment also saw growth, while the Publication segment experienced a slight contraction in both sales and income.
Management’s strategic outlook emphasizes improving overall profitability and refining the development pipeline. The company intends to mitigate the inherent volatility of the HD Games sub-segment by leveraging its Publication, Amusement, and Merchandising segments as sources of recurring earnings. Future growth strategies include expanding the reach of existing intellectual property, optimizing the HD game portfolio, and capitalizing on upcoming releases such as Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis. Leadership remains focused on enhancing operating profit margins through a more disciplined investment approach that balances new intellectual property creation with the elevation of existing assets to AAA status.
