Square Enix Holdings reported financial results for the first half of fiscal year 2017, ending September 30, 2016. The company achieved net sales of ¥106.3 billion, representing a year-over-year increase of ¥20 billion. However, operating income declined by ¥1.5 billion to ¥11.1 billion, and net income fell by ¥1.8 billion to ¥5.5 billion. The discrepancy between rising sales and declining profits was largely attributed to the Digital Entertainment segment, where the amortization of development costs for major titles and the underperformance of new smart device games weighed on margins.
The Digital Entertainment segment saw strong revenue growth driven by overseas launches of titles such as Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Hitman, and the PlayStation 4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Conversely, the segment’s profitability was hampered by the lack of new MMO expansion packs compared to the previous year and higher upfront marketing expenditures. In the Amusement segment, while same-store sales remained strong, operating income decreased due to early depreciation charges on new arcade hardware. The Publication segment also experienced a decline in both sales and profit, reflecting a cyclical lull in animated television series adaptations.
Management maintains a neutral outlook for the remainder of the fiscal year, opting not to revise initial guidance. The strategy for the second half of the year focuses on the global release of Final Fantasy XV and other key titles, alongside a more rigorous quality control process for smart device games, including increased use of beta testing and soft launches. The company continues to prioritize digital distribution and is exploring new formats, such as virtual reality manga, to diversify its intellectual property portfolio.
