Stream Hatchet
It also surpassed first-person shooters as the most popular genre on the platform.
Non-gaming content on Twitch experienced significant growth throughout 2023, culminating in a record-breaking performance in July. The genre reached nearly 375 million hours watched that month, marking its highest monthly value since January 2019 and allowing it to surpass first-person shooter games as the most popular genre on the platform for the first time that year. This shift underscores a broader trend where live streaming platforms are increasingly defined by social and special event programming rather than traditional gaming titles alone.
The Just Chatting category remains the primary driver of this growth, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the non-gaming market share in 2023 with approximately 2.3 billion hours watched. Approximately 27% of all unique channels on Twitch are categorized under Just Chatting, highlighting its central role in the platform's ecosystem. Influential creators, such as Kai Cenat, significantly bolster these figures through high-engagement, long-form broadcasts.
Beyond casual interaction, competitive special events and sports have emerged as critical pillars of non-gaming viewership. The "La Velada del Año III" event alone generated over 23 million hours watched in July, representing 6.2% of the genre's total monthly viewership. Similarly, the sports category has seen a surge in popularity, accumulating 199 million hours watched in 2023, largely fueled by the disruptive influence of the Kings League. These findings indicate that non-gaming content has successfully diversified its appeal, moving beyond simple conversation to include high-production, event-based entertainment that competes directly with traditional gaming content for audience attention.
