Nintendo has officially clarified that a widely circulated figure of 5 million units sold for the Switch 2 is inaccurate. The company stated that the data, which appeared briefly on its investor relations website, was internal test information that was unintentionally made public. Nintendo emphasized that this figure does not represent actual sales results or official projections for the console.
The confusion arose following a strong global launch for the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. In the four days immediately following its release, Nintendo confirmed that 3.5 million units had been sold worldwide, with significant regional performance including over 1.1 million units in the United States and more than 1.3 million in Japan. These initial figures established the system as one of the fastest-selling consoles in the company's history.
Industry analysts, including David Gibson of MST Financial, sought clarification directly from the manufacturer regarding the erroneous 5 million unit report. While the company has not provided updated official sales totals beyond the initial launch window, analysts anticipate that the actual performance remains robust, with some projections suggesting sales could reach approximately 5.4 million units when the next official results are disclosed in August 2025. The incident highlights the sensitivity of market data and the potential for internal testing metrics to be misinterpreted as finalized commercial performance.
