Let’s Plays have established themselves as a significant, independent entertainment format in Germany, mirroring the consumption patterns of traditional streaming services for film and music. The primary objective of the analysis is to quantify the reach and cultural impact of these gaming videos, which feature players providing commentary while showcasing their gameplay. The findings indicate that approximately 16 million Germans consume this content, representing a year-on-year growth of roughly seven percent. Furthermore, the format encourages active participation, with 19 percent of German gamers—equating to over 8.5 million individuals—expressing an interest in producing and publishing their own gaming videos in the future.
The research highlights a strong financial connection between creators and their audiences. Beyond traditional revenue streams like advertising and merchandise, approximately one in ten viewers has provided direct financial support to their favorite streamers through donations. This community engagement also extends to philanthropy; prominent German streamers have successfully leveraged their platforms to raise significant funds for charitable causes, with individual events generating hundreds of thousands of euros in donations.
The data is derived from a representative online survey conducted by YouGov Deutschland GmbH between July 27 and August 3, 2017. The study surveyed 2,000 participants aged 16 and older, with results weighted to reflect the broader German population. By examining these trends, the analysis underscores the evolution of Let’s Plays from niche content into a mainstream, interactive media experience that fosters social engagement and community-driven charitable initiatives within the German games market.
