Cloud gaming now accounts for a double-digit percentage of total Xbox play hours.
New Player Focus. Microsoft is shifting its strategy to focus on acquiring new players through cloud gaming and cross-platform access.
Microsoft gaming chief Phil Spencer addresses the current state of the Xbox business, emphasizing a strategy focused on long-term growth and market expansion amid industry-wide stagnation. While acknowledging that the global console market has remained largely static at approximately 200 million households for several years, Spencer expresses optimism regarding growth in PC and cloud gaming sectors. He highlights that cloud gaming now accounts for a double-digit percentage of total Xbox playtime, signaling a shift in how the company reaches players beyond traditional hardware constraints.
The recent reduction of 1,900 staff members across Microsoft’s gaming divisions is framed as a necessary measure to ensure the long-term sustainability and profitability of the organization. Spencer notes that the division’s revenue growth, while significant at 61% in the final quarter of 2023, was heavily bolstered by the $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Excluding this acquisition, organic growth remains at 6%, which, while outperforming the broader industry’s 0.6% growth rate, necessitates a disciplined approach to resource allocation and team alignment.
Regarding the future of physical media, the company maintains support for disc-based games but intends to follow consumer demand, which is increasingly shifting toward digital formats. Spencer clarifies that the company’s strategy does not hinge on an all-digital transition, despite the rising costs and logistical challenges associated with manufacturing disc drives. Furthermore, the company remains committed to integrating the full portfolio of ZeniMax and Activision Blizzard titles into the Game Pass subscription service, though technical backend work is ongoing to facilitate day-one releases for these franchises.
