The Number Navigation Game serves as a critical tool for fostering adaptive number knowledge among students, functioning as a digital environment that facilitates deliberate practice. By analyzing the engagement patterns of 214 participants, research confirms that game-based learning can successfully elicit the effortful, persistent behaviors necessary for deep skill acquisition. While game performance correlates positively with gains in adaptive mathematical expertise, it does not significantly influence arithmetic fluency, suggesting that the game’s pedagogical value is specialized rather than universal across all mathematical domains.
Four distinct performance profiles emerge from this analysis, ranging from low-stable engagement to high-performing mastery. The most significant learning gains are observed in the improving profile, a group characterized by steady, incremental progress despite lower initial performance levels. These students demonstrate higher time-on-task and a consistent ability to navigate challenging mathematical scenarios, effectively mirroring the core tenets of deliberate practice. This trajectory highlights that meaningful educational outcomes are driven by sustained effort rather than innate aptitude or initial proficiency.
Crucially, the findings challenge the assumption that high-flow states are the primary indicator of effective game-based learning. Students exhibiting the most significant growth report lower levels of flow and perceived challenge, indicating that their engagement is defined by the non-spontaneous, rigorous nature of deliberate practice rather than the immersive, effortless experience often associated with casual gaming. This distinction underscores the importance of designing educational software that prioritizes cognitive effort over entertainment value. Ultimately, well-structured digital environments can serve as powerful vehicles for developing complex mathematical expertise when they successfully encourage students to engage in the demanding, iterative process of deliberate practice.
