The Shanghai-based esports tournament organizer has changed its name to Hero Esports.
The Shanghai-based esports tournament organizer VSPO has initiated a significant corporate restructuring, rebranding itself as Hero Esports to facilitate international expansion. As part of this transition, co-founder and former CFO Danny Tang has been appointed as the new CEO, tasked with driving the company’s global growth. Concurrently, founder Dino Ying is stepping down from his role as CEO to serve as executive chairman, where he will focus on product innovation and high-level initiatives, including the Esports Asian Champions League, the Esports World Cup, and the Olympic Esports Games. Luying Wang, previously the group vice president of capital markets, finance, and legal, has been named the acting CFO.
These organizational changes occur against a backdrop of heavy institutional investment from the Saudi Arabian government’s Savvy Games Group, which previously committed $265 million to the company through a Series C funding round. Tencent also maintains a minority stake in the organization. The consolidation of tournament organizers under the influence of the Saudi Public Investment Fund—which also holds ownership stakes in ESL, FACEIT, and Esports Engine—has significantly reduced the number of independent entities in the global esports market. This shift reflects a broader trend toward centralization within the industry, as major state-backed entities continue to exert influence over the infrastructure of competitive gaming on a global scale.
