KLab
KLab’s financial results for the second quarter of 2015 reflect a period of transition characterized by a decline in quarterly revenue and operating profit, despite overall growth in the first half of the year compared to 2014. Revenue for Q2 2015 reached 4,797 million yen, representing a 14.9% decrease from the previous quarter, while operating profit fell by 47.8% to 532 million yen. This downturn was primarily driven by decreased performance in the Simplified Chinese and Korean versions of its flagship title, Love Live! School Idol Festival, alongside rising costs associated with salary increases, promotional TV campaigns, and prototype development.
Despite the quarterly dip, the company maintains a positive outlook for the remainder of the year, forecasting record-high revenue of 6,500 million yen and an operating profit of 1,000 million yen for Q3 2015. This optimism is anchored by the successful launch of BLEACH Brave Souls and the anticipated global release of Glee Forever!. The company is actively refining its development strategy by prioritizing titles based on popular intellectual property (IP) to mitigate the risks of high customer acquisition costs and market saturation. By leveraging established fan bases, KLab aims to secure more reliable returns while maintaining a smaller portfolio of original titles for potential high-growth hits.
To support long-term stability and operational efficiency, KLab has introduced the KLabGames Software Development Kit (KG SDK) to streamline development cycles and costs for both internal and partner-led projects. Furthermore, the company is diversifying its business model beyond mobile online gaming by establishing a new subsidiary focused on event management and IP licensing. These initiatives are designed to stabilize revenue streams and capitalize on the company’s existing IP acquisition capabilities, moving beyond traditional game monetization to include merchandise and live entertainment.
