Stream Hatchet
Non-gaming streams increased by nearly 6% in 2022.
The rise of non-gaming content on Twitch is fundamentally altering the platform’s engagement landscape, as evidenced by the community response to Super Bowl LVII. While Twitch did not host official broadcasts of the event, the platform served as a significant hub for real-time commentary and social interaction. This trend aligns with broader industry shifts where non-gaming content, particularly sports and major cultural events, increasingly captures audience attention on platforms traditionally dominated by gaming.
Data from February 12–13, 2023, reveals that the Super Bowl generated over 138,000 mentions in Twitch chat. This surge was driven largely by popular creators hosting watch parties, which facilitated high levels of viewer interaction regarding the game’s outcome and individual player performances. The NFL-related conversation volume doubled during and immediately following the event, rising from a daily average of 33,000 mentions to 67,000.
The halftime show also served as a major catalyst for engagement. Rihanna’s performance generated 22,400 mentions, representing a 590% increase in daily activity compared to her pre-event average. These findings underscore the growing potential for non-gaming brands to leverage live streaming platforms for audience engagement. As creators continue to diversify their content, the data suggests that major cultural milestones provide significant opportunities for brands to tap into highly active, real-time communities, even in the absence of direct broadcast rights.
