Growing categories. Growth was heavily concentrated in utility-based apps during the early quarantine phase.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 created a bifurcated economic environment for the mobile app industry, characterized by an initial quarantine phase followed by the anticipation of a broader recession. The primary thesis examines how these shifting conditions impacted app engagement and marketing spend across various verticals. While conventional wisdom suggested that gaming would be a recession-resistant beneficiary of stay-at-home mandates, the data indicates that growth was not uniformly distributed across the gaming sector, nor was it the primary driver of app store performance during the early stages of the pandemic.
Analysis of iOS download rankings in the United States from January 1, 2020, through March 20, 2020, reveals significant declines for travel, ridesharing, and dating apps, such as Airbnb, Lyft, and Tinder. Conversely, categories essential to remote life—including communication tools like Zoom and Skype, education platforms, and home delivery services—demonstrated the most consistent growth. Contrary to the expectation that mobile gaming would surge across the board, major publishers like King, Supercell, and Voodoo experienced stagnant or declining download positions for many of their titles.
The findings suggest that while some publishers reduced marketing spend in anticipation of a protracted recession, the resulting engagement boosts were concentrated in a very small subset of apps. Only a few gaming titles, such as Playrix’s Fishdom, showed significant positive regression in download rankings. Ultimately, the pandemic’s initial impact favored utility and communication software over entertainment, highlighting that gaming’s status as a recession-resistant category is not a universal guarantee for all mobile publishers.
