GTA V: The 10 Year Anniversary on Streaming

Grand Theft Auto V has maintained a dominant position in the live-streaming industry for a decade, proving that its longevity extends well beyond initial sales. Since Q2 2016, the title has accumulated nearly 8.1 billion hours watched across major global platforms, including Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and Facebook Live. The game’s sustained relevance is primarily attributed to the open-world nature of the title and the consistent release of content for its online component, which has fostered a massive, dedicated community of creators and viewers.

Data indicates that the game reached a viewership peak of 874 million hours in Q2 2021, a record that briefly dethroned the Non-Gaming category as the most-watched content on primary streaming platforms. While overall viewership has experienced a 17% decline compared to that peak, this trend aligns with a broader 22.6% contraction across the live-streaming sector. Despite this, the game remains a top-tier performer, ranking third in total hours watched during Q2 2023. Engagement remains high, with the average viewer spending nearly 14 hours per month watching the game, significantly outpacing engagement metrics for competitors like League of Legends.

The primary driver of modern engagement is the rise of role-playing and private servers, which accounted for 23.4% of the game’s market share in Q2 2023. This shift toward community-driven role-play has stabilized viewership and provided a platform for influential creators to maintain consistent audiences. By leveraging these interactive, player-led experiences, the game continues to secure its status as a cornerstone of the streaming ecosystem, even as the industry anticipates future developments from the franchise.
