The esports industry saw a significant consolidation in December 2023 with the merger of UK-based EXCEL Esports and Spain-based Giants Gaming. The two organizations combined their operations to form a new entity operating under the name GiantX. While the specific financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, the merger represents a strategic alignment of two prominent European esports brands to strengthen their competitive and commercial positioning.
The newly formed GiantX will maintain a workforce of approximately 60 employees distributed across offices in London, Malaga, and a performance center in Berlin. Leadership responsibilities are shared, with EXCEL CEO Tim Reichert and Giants CEO Jose Diaz serving as co-CEOs of the combined organization. Furthermore, JRJ Group and Toms Capital, which previously invested in EXCEL in 2018, remain the largest shareholders in the new entity.
GiantX will continue to compete in major international and regional circuits, including the League of Legends EMEA Championship and the Valorant Champions Tour, as well as the LVP and Valorant Game Changers in Spain. The company intends to retain all existing partnerships and sponsorships previously held by the individual organizations, ensuring continuity in its commercial operations. This merger reflects a broader trend of consolidation within the European esports sector as organizations seek to achieve greater scale and operational efficiency in a competitive global market.
