As of Q2 2015, game apps accounted for 75% of total sales revenue from app stores in Germany.
Game apps serve as the primary economic engine for the broader mobile application market, consistently accounting for the majority of revenue generated through major platforms like Google Play and Apple’s App Store. As of the second quarter of 2015, games represented 75 percent of total app store sales revenue in Germany. This dominance has remained stable even as the overall app market has expanded, with total revenue from game apps increasing by a factor of 2.2 since 2013. Beyond direct financial contributions, the high technical demands of modern gaming are identified as a key driver for the ongoing development and innovation of smartphone and tablet hardware.
The geographic scope of this analysis focuses on the German market within a global context. Germany currently ranks as the second-largest market for game apps in Europe, trailing only Great Britain, and holds the seventh position globally. German developers have established a significant international presence, with the United States serving as a critical export market; more than 25 percent of the revenue generated by German game app companies originates from the U.S.
The findings are derived from a collaborative special report titled "The mobile gaming landscape in Germany," produced by the German Games Industry Association (BIU) and the market research firm App Annie. The data highlights that while the industry has achieved substantial growth and international recognition, there remains untapped potential for domestic companies. Industry leadership suggests that while German developers have successfully navigated the global market, the sector could further flourish if the local business environment were optimized to match the competitive conditions found in regions like Scandinavia or the United States.
