The primary objective of this research initiative is to define and analyze the mechanisms required to integrate pervasive gameplay with educational and reflective learning outcomes. The central thesis posits that a significant gap exists in the transition between instructional design and actual game implementation, necessitating a more robust, evidence-based mapping of Serious Game Mechanics (SGM) onto pedagogical patterns. By establishing a structured methodology, the research aims to provide developers and stakeholders with a reliable framework to ensure that game-based experiences effectively foster behavior change, awareness, and skill development.
The methodology centers on the Purpose-Processing Model, which decomposes game elements into purpose, process, and structure to align pedagogical goals with interactive experiences. Key challenges identified include the difficulty of implementing context-aware, location-sensitive learning sequences and the necessity of balancing social media engagement to avoid learner fatigue. The research emphasizes that successful pervasive learning requires a delicate equilibrium between the information provided and the social context in which it is delivered.
This work targets a multidisciplinary audience of designers, researchers, and educators across academia and industry. The scope encompasses the intersection of serious games, interactive media, and social networks, drawing on findings from international workshops and collaborative projects. By validating the extension of the Purpose-Processing Methodology to include pervasive and social contexts, the research seeks to improve the quality of serious game design, reduce time-to-market, and provide a clearer understanding of how gameplay can serve as a sustainable catalyst for reflection and behavioral modification.
