This revenue came from 20 million downloads following its March 21, 2024, launch. The game aims for closer integration with the broader Call of Duty ecosystem.
The launch of Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile has introduced a complex internal competition within Activision’s mobile portfolio, signaling a strategic shift away from the company's reliance on the Tencent-developed Call of Duty: Mobile. While Warzone Mobile aims to integrate more closely with the broader console and PC Call of Duty ecosystem, its initial performance has been underwhelming compared to its predecessor. Data from Appmagic indicates that Warzone Mobile generated approximately $2 million in in-app purchases from 20 million downloads following its March 2024 release. In contrast, Call of Duty: Mobile achieved roughly $14 million in revenue from 66 million installs during a comparable post-launch window in 2019.
The disparity in performance is attributed to a more challenging current marketing landscape and the significant technical hurdles involved in aligning the new title with existing console and PC content pipelines. Despite these early struggles, Activision appears to be prioritizing the new, internally controlled title over the older, third-party-developed game. By moving away from the Tencent-owned Timi studio, Activision secures full control over the project’s revenue and long-term development roadmap.
This transition creates an awkward market environment where two distinct versions of the same franchise compete for the same player base. While leadership at Activision maintains that the mobile shooter market is large enough to sustain both titles, the strategic focus clearly favors the newer, platform-integrated Warzone Mobile. This shift effectively leaves the established Call of Duty: Mobile to operate independently, potentially undermining its long-term viability as the company pivots toward a unified, platform-free future for the franchise.
