See it on page 1The 2025 study on French gaming habits, conducted by Médiamétrie for the Syndicat des Éditeurs de Logiciels de Loisirs (SELL), establishes that video games have reached a historic milestone in France, solidifying their status as a mainstream, intergenerational cultural pillar. Based on an online survey of 4,001 individuals aged 10 to 80, the research confirms that 40.2 million French people—over 70% of the population—engaged with video games in 2025. This growth is largely driven by adults, who now constitute 88% of the player base, with the average age of a player stabilizing at 40 years.
The data highlights a significant shift toward gender parity, with women representing 49% of all players and a majority (55%) within the 16–30 age demographic. Engagement levels have also intensified, as 76% of players participate at least weekly, dedicating an average of 7 hours and 55 minutes to the hobby. Players increasingly utilize multiple platforms, with smartphones and consoles serving as the primary, complementary devices. Beyond individual play, the medium has become a vital social tool; 65% of players share sessions with others, and a growing number of users identify as "gamers," particularly among younger cohorts.
The findings also underscore a professional and responsible evolution within the industry. There is a marked increase in interest regarding careers in gaming, especially among young women, who show a 13-point rise in professional interest compared to 2023. Furthermore, the industry’s focus on responsible gaming is reflected in high parental involvement, with 95% of parents aware of parental control systems and 66% actively utilizing PEGI classifications. Ultimately, the report characterizes video games as a mature, essential, and socially connective medium that has transitioned from a niche activity to a central component of daily life in France.
