How To Market A Game
The average duration for games in Early Access is approximately 399 days.
This analysis examines the operational trends of games transitioning through Steam’s Early Access program, focusing on development duration and pricing strategies. Utilizing data from VGInsights, the study covers games released between 2014 and 2023 that have successfully exited Early Access. To ensure data quality and exclude hobbyist projects or asset flips, the analysis filters for titles with at least 10 user reviews.
Key findings indicate that the median duration for a game in Early Access is 260 days, with a mean of approximately 399 days. Notably, the data reveals no correlation between the length of time a game spends in Early Access and its final percentage of positive user reviews, suggesting that extended development cycles do not inherently improve player reception.
Regarding pricing, the analysis shows that developers frequently adjust costs during the Early Access phase, with a median price change of $4.00. While there is a minor negative correlation (-0.2253) between increasing prices and review positivity, the impact is statistically negligible. This suggests that developers have significant flexibility to raise prices as development progresses without risking substantial backlash from the player base.
The study concludes with a technical recommendation for Steam developers: while the "Early Access" tag is mandatory for visibility, it should be placed at the end of the tag list. Because Steam prioritizes the first five tags for algorithmic matching, placing the Early Access tag in a secondary position ensures the game is better categorized by its genre and gameplay features rather than its development status, thereby improving discoverability among target audiences.
